This is my first blog post in English.

I decided to write a review/my opinion about the Tea tree shampoo of Petal Fresh. I have heard different opinions about this hair product. On social media many people are complaining that it causes itchiness, dry scalp and dry hair. I was curious about it, because when you take a look at the bottle you see ‘Scalp treatment’. So according to it’s label the shampoo invigorates & soothes (the effects of tea tree). It’s vegan, it contains natural ingredients. It should be helping you to get rid off itchiness, dandruff and dry scalp.

About 5 months ago it was time to test it out myself. I was a little bit nervous, because I have a very sensitive and dry skin. I bought the shampoo at Holland & Barrett.

MY FIRST IMPRESSION:

  • A big bottle of 475ml
  • A minty fragrance!
  • The shampoo lathers a little bit
  • A small amount of product is enough to apply
  • My scalp feels fresh and clean afterwards
  • My scalp immediately tingles afterwards (a nice feeling, no irritation of the skin)
  • It’s easy to apply on hair

I did 3 experiments to test the shampoo. Which experiment is the best?

EXPERIMENT ROUTINE 1:

  • Wet hair
  • Shampoo -> Rinse out
  • Conditioner -> Rinse out
  • Leave-in conditioner

RESULTS EXPERIMENT 1: In this experiment I applied the shampoo directly on my scalp. I have noticed that I got an itchy scalp on day 2 and it got worse on day 3. So I couldn’t extend my next wash day very long. Day 3 was the max!

EXPERIMENT ROUTINE 2:

  • Pre poo with oil
  • Wet hair
  • Shampoo -> Rinse out
  • Conditioner -> Rinse out
  • Leave-in conditioner

RESULTS EXPERIMENT 2: Before I applied the shampoo I did a pre poo. (A pre poo is a scalp massage with oil before you wash your hair). Well, it was on day 4 the itchiness began and I had to wash my hair on day 5.

EXPERIMENT ROUTINE 3:

  • Pre poo with oil
  • Dirty deepco -> Rinse out
  • Shampoo -> Rinse out
  • Conditioner -> Rinse out
  • Gel

RESULTS EXPERIMENT 3: First I massage my scalp with oil. Next step: On wet hair I applied the deep conditioner (A dirty deep conditioner is applying deep conditioner before you wash your hair with shampoo). For 30 minutes I let it sit. I rinse it out with warm water and then I applied the shampoo. No itchy scalp until my next wash day! Nowadays I wash my hair on day 8!

CONCLUSION:

  • Experiment routine 3 is definitely the best way for my hair!
  • Pre poo in advance works very well.
  • The combination pre poo & dirty deepco works perfectly.
  • Tip 1: When you massage the scalp regularly (3 or 4 times a week), it stimulates the bloodflow, hair growth and it removes build-up!
  • Tip 2 (in general): When in doubt; You apply some product on the inside of your elbow for a 10/15 minutes and then remove it gently with a tissue. When you put a product that is agressive to your skin, your skin could react in different ways; You could experience a burning feeling and your skin could become red.
  • Applying the shampoo directly on the scalp causes itchiness, already on day 2.
  • I am not sure which ingredients cause itchiness. It could be one of the detergents or fragrances. Personally I think it depends on the sensitivity of a person.
  • I like this shampoo though as it cleanse my scalp and hair very well.
  • I wanted to try it out myself, before saying this Tea tree shampoo isn’t good for my hair and scalp. Now I know it could work very well, except not directly on the scalp.

This was my review/opinion about the Tea tree shampoo of Petal Fresh. I hope you liked it. Please feel free to leave a comment below.

Disclaimer: I only write down what works for my hair. So this doesn’t mean it will work for your hair too. Discontinue using this product when you get skin irritation. Furthermore there is no partnership with Petal Fresh and Holland&Barrett.
